Sushikyu (Tekone-zushi)
Sushikyu (Tekone-zushi)
Tekone-zushi is a local Ise delicacy where seafood like skipjack and maguro (tuna) is marinated in soy sauce and then combined with sushi rice. It is said that Tekone-zushi was named after fishermen soaking the skipjack tuna that they caught in between catches in soy sauce on deck, then lavishly mixing in and eating the vinegared rice which they had brought with them.
Sushikyu, with its outstanding location overlooking the Isuzu River, is our recommendation if you are going to eat Tekone-zushi. The shop, which is constructed out of old timber from the Uji bridge from the 1869 sengu (the tradition of rebuilding Ise Shrine every 20 years), is an invaluable piece of Ise’s cultural heritage. Sushikyu has a unique atmosphere found nowhere else.
