Futami Okitama Shrine and Meoto Iwa
Futami Okitama Shrine and Meoto Iwa
Futami Okitama Shrine is located in a phenomenal location with an expansive view of the ocean. Stroll the shrine grounds and be greeted with the fresh breeze off the waves and the sound of the splashing tide, soothing body and mind.
The shrine is hugely popular as an auspicious site bringing good luck in matchmaking and marital harmony, and Meoto Iwa has become a classic Ise destination. The two rocks of Meoto Iwa are tied together by large shimenawa (ropes traditionally used in the Shinto faith), giving the appearance that they are close companions.
When walking along the path approaching the shrine, you will notice the numerous statues of frogs. Futami Okitama Shrine considers frogs to be messengers of the Great God Sarutahiko and treats them as an extremely valuable presence. Find the mangan kaeru (the frog of fulfilled prayers) in the hand-washing basin and splash it with water. Ledgend has it, being surrounded by the throngs of stone frogs will make your wish will come true.
