Akafuku Honten (Akafuku mochi)
Akafuku Honten (Akafuku mochi)
There are many people who give and many who receive Akafuku mochi, a local delicacy that we would go so far as to say is synonymous with Ise. Akafuku mochi is a popular rice cake confection that combines soft rice cake with koshian (strained bean paste); the confection has three lines in it like the running stream of the Isuzu River, which flows near Ise Shrine Shin Iki (Ise Jingu).
It is said that Akafuku mochi was invented around 300 years ago. The name "Akafuku" originates from the Japanese phrase constructed of four "kanji" characters "seki shin i fuku" using the first and last character "Aka" (also read as "seki") and "Fuku", meaning “to celebrate the happiness of oneself and others with a pure, genuine heart”. The phrase is purported to have been shortened to use only the first and the last Chinese characters, yielding the name Akafuku.
The Akafuku Honten building located in Oharaimachi has a 130-year old history and is also popular as a tourist spot. The Akafuku mochi is exceptional to enjoy while taking in the feel of the historical building.
